Rich Girl

During the past month, I've been polling as many friends as possible re: the legendary 80s pop duo Hall & Oates. When asked if they appreciate and/or remember the well-coifed band, without fail, anyone under 30 has stared at me as if I just told them that I'm the new president of the Kelly Clarkson fan club. I walked into Fly Bar a few months ago and did a double take when I heard H&O Greatest Hits playing instead of the usual ambient lounge music they tend to spin late night. I walked over to the bar to order up a few drinks ... glanced around me at the other patrons and noticed that everyone had a huge grin on their faces. Not that I'm-drunk-and-I-love-everyone face, but the this-music-brings-back-such-vivid-back-in-the-day-memories face. A priceless moment that I wish I could have bottled up. H&O is one of those bands that reminds me of our time in Chapel Hill. Michael McDonald/The Doobie Brothers is another one on that list. Needless to say, I went home and downloaded the entire album that night. Later that weekend, while I was in Montreal, I got a late night voicemail from Bill which was unintelligible at first, but turned out to be a jukebox somewhere on the Cape playing She's Gone. Genius!

Note: After I posted the above, Rad (29 yrs old, which goes against my test results) emailed me this: "So now I know that you are my brother ... we were driving back from VT yesterday and was listening to a radio station that was playing a song that took me back to Chapel Hill …. was getting all nostalgic in my head and thought – I need to go home and get this album that has all their bext stuff…..Hall and Oates!" Niiiiiiiiiiiice!!!
